2009: SEATTLE “SWIMMIN’ UPSTREAM”
After a grueling east coast trip to NYC in 2008, the Paloozians decide to keep things a bit closer to home and venture up to Seattle for this year’s festivities.
Nothing quite says it’s time for Palooza like a warm Sausage McMuffin and a cold Coors Light at the airport.
Upon their arrival in Seattle, the Paloozians decide to skip the McMuffins and just go with the beer. Wise choice.
This year marks the long-awaited return of wayward Paloozian, Bill "B-Luv" Taylor. Of course, all he had to do was drive down the street for this one.
Bill, Al, Milo, Craig and Sean stop to take a group photo before heading in for the Mariners-Angels game. Everyone is always so damn spry on day one.
We sat about 30 rows behind home plate for what turned out to be Scott Kazmir's first game as an Angel. But Felix Hernandez was dealing and locked in a shutout win.
Leave it to Sean to seize the moment when two Ichiro fans from Japan leave to get something to eat by making good use of their fan. You know he really does love that Ichiro.
Milo looks primed and ready for his customary night one antics. Although all Paloozians have noticed a major drop in his hijinks since his ill-fated trip to New Orleans.
In an effort to knock their traditional pizza night off the checklist early, the Paloozians dive into some artisan pies.
Serious Pie makes them with tasty ingredients and the crust is outrageous. Here’s the pie that Smalls orders—the epic Rosemary Potato. Delish!!
After dinner, the boys wander around town in search of some fun. Along the way they pass a military supply store with an imaginative window display merchandiser.
Milo sips one of his signature Vodka Crans in one of his signature Nike jackets at Dahlia Lounge.
Sean looks pretty spiffy in his new carefully-selected Mariners hat as the Paloozians head back to get some rest.
The boys get an early start to day two by going on a Locks Cruise from Lake Washington out to Puget Sound. Yeah, we see you down there, Smalls.
Before the lads board their boat, they spot the illustrious SS Beaver. I’m just gonna leave that one alone and let you insert your favorite beaver joke.
Milo flashes that devious smile as our boat makes its way out to the open water.
The Paloozians cruise past a few of the boats that star in "The Deadliest Catch" on TV. Despite our efforts, this crusty bastard refuses to wave back.
There are hundreds of million-dollar floating cottages along the route. This is the one Tom Hanks lived in for "Sleepless in Seattle".
Here we are entering the locks, as we leave the fresh water of Lake Washington and head on to the salty waves of Puget Sound. Thousands of salmon are splashing around at the transtion.
After we pass through, the lock re-closes and the boat sinks down to the level of the Sound. It's the same system used for the Panama Canal.
Once out on Puget Sound, the wind really kicks in as we make our way over to the port of Seattle.
With all the salmon splashing around, the birds and seals just can't help themselves. This seal bites a salmon in half as a gull swoops in for leftovers.
Sean and Al contemplate their fourteenth Paloozian adventure as the boat makes its way back to downtown Seattle and their pending roadie out to Redhook Brewery.
Seattle is definitely one of the prettier cities you'll ever see. Lots of modern buildings and the Space Needle, all right against the water.
As the boys pull closer toward the city, the lure of freshly brewed Redhook beer is palpable.
Here is Craig in front of our boat before we head on to Redhook. Granted, it was no "SS Beaver" but the Paloozians definitely had a "Goodtime".
After about eight samples during the tour, Sean agrees to lead a hearty round of cheers for Ballard High School (don't ask).
The Redhook Brewery is pretty tiny but that doesn’t stop us from visiting it twice on this trip. The beer is tasty and they give lots of samples.
There's nothing quite like brewery-fresh beer. Here is our first Extra Special Bitter of the day.
The Paloozians had never actually seen wild hops growing like ivy, but Redhook has loads of these bad boys growing around the restaurant patio.
On Thursday night the Paloozians change up their plans a bit and decide to hit a preseason Seahawks-Raiders game at Quest Field.
The Paloozians are pretty high up but the stadium is impressive. Hey, is that LA off in the distance?
Sean, Al and Bill enjoying some fine malted beverages at the game. Seattle goes on to beat the Raiders 31-21.
The highlight of our trip is a pre-dawn excursion to go salmon fishing on the Skykomish River. Here is the sun finally rising over the mountains.
Yes, those are llamas grazing along the banks of the river.
Milo keeps himself pretty bundled up as our guide fires up the engine to get us over to the prime fishing spot.
The salmon in this area are big and aggressive. They jump out of the water and race toward our boat all day long. But we go on to catch about fifty of them, so I think we win.
Milo starts out strong, bringing in the first fish. Here he is with one of the bigger catches of the day. His last one of the afternoon will make its way to Bill's grill.
Sean gets the award for landing the biggest fish of the day at an estimated 6 pounds of man-fighting salmon.
Our guide Mark is working hard to find that magical lure that will give Al a shot at catching Craig for the Paloozian salmon catching title.
Craig is the last to bring one into the boat, but he tears it up from there. Al desperately tries to keep pace but is forced to settle for a solid 2nd place finish.
Shortly after being startled by an enormous donkey lurking in the hills, Al looks back to see if Craig is actually taking the last piece of bait to ensure his epic victory.
One minute you're living the life, swimming up-stream, getting ready to hook up with some salmon stud. The next thing you know, you're some fool's salmon dinner.
Our fourth day starts out with a trip down to the Pike Place Market and a very tasty breakfast at Etta's. True to form, B-Luv is still just 10 minutes away for nearly an hour.
Next to Etta's is the original Starbucks location. The Paloozians are impressed when Sean walks in, is immediately recognized, given a standing ovation and awarded the key to the city. I guess he’s had a few lattes.
The Pike Place Market doesn't look like much from the outside but it is very cool--like a permanent farmers market with tons of fresh fish and crustaceans.
Aside from all the fish, there are loads of different types of Pacific Northwestern berries, jellies and jams.
The salmon at this market make the salmon we caught the day before look like sardines. King Salmon are just huge.
Pike has just about any type of seafood you can think of, including massive stacks of all different types of shellfish.
When you order a whole fish from this particular stand, the fishmongers throw it back and forth to each other before wrapping it up for you.
The Paloozians are looking a tad fishy. It’s time to get on the road to catch some beers and tunes at Bumbershoot.
Bumbershoot is a cool music and art festival that takes place on the grounds surrounding the Space Needle.
Tucked between music stages and beer gardens are all sorts of things to check out, like the Rockstar booth.
After catching a few songs from Everest, the Paloozians make their way over to see Katy Perry belt out a few pop tunes to a few thousand excited tween girls.
After the show, they quickly pull themselves together to catch All-American Rejects from a few rows back. The Rejects put on a great show, with Tyson Ritter going wild.
Then it was on to the UW-LSU game, where the Paloozians pre-game at Earl's on the Ave. There, they meet Justin and his insane wife, Jessica. After a couple drinks she decided to beat the hell out of all of us.
Setting the tone for a weak year for the Huskies, they drop their opener to the highly ranked Bengal Tigers.
It takes a few days, but we do manage to catch Al sneaking in a little shut-eye. What is it about Al and LSU games?!
Nobody remembers what this was all about and I’m pretty sure that’s best for everyone involved.
Our final day starts off with lots of rain and some outstanding soul food for brunch at The Kingfish Cafe.
This would be The Kingfish's version of coffee cake. We probably should just have that with our lattes and been done. But don’t worry, we bravely soldier on.
After a tasty breakfast, the Paloozians visit the Air & Space Museum. Here’s Milo checking out a replica of one of the original Boeing airplanes.
Somehow the plane Craig used to fly back in the Nam made its way into this museum. He is pleasantly surprised to see his old friend again and with a fresh coat of paint.
Al looking pretty cocky in the cockpit of a fighter jet.
One cool thing at the museum is one of the Air Force One planes used by John Kennedy. I think I see Marilyn's bra tucked under the desk.
Before dialing up Castro to call off the Cuban Missile Crisis, Craig pauses to reflect on an outstanding Palooza.
